Wilbury Sessions – Field, See & Mason plus 3

Last night (Thursday March 4, 2021) Lindsay Field, Sam See and Glyn Mason played at the Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne along with James Black (ex-Mondo Rock & a regular on Rockwiz), drummer Angus Burchall (John Farnham Band) & multi-instrumentalist, bass player Paul Cartwright (who has played with Brian Cadd, Glenn Shorrock & others). Sam was MD for the show which was described as re-imagined songs (from the Traveling Wilburys songbook) for local audiences. Some brief background about the Traveling Wilburys. They began in 1988 & featured 5 high-profile musicians: George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbitson, Jeff Lynne & Bob Dylan.

Last night’s show covered a range of songs sung by the Wilburys & other songs from the catalogues by each of the Wilbury members. So we got to hear:

End of the Line, Inside Out, Heading for the Light, Poor House

Congratulations, The Times They are A Changing

Don’t Back Down, Free Falling, Evil Woman

Here Comes the Sun, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something,

Blue Bayou, Pretty Woman, Not Alone Anymore, You Got It

And the night ended with the last single for the band Wilbury Twist.

Lindsay’s delivery of the Beatles songs was excellent but the standout songs for us were the Roy Orbitson songs sung by Glyn. He has the right range & the right power in his delivery for these.

The Athenaeum Theatre was the ideal setting for this show. It’s a beautiful old theatre, founded back in 1839. It was Melbourne’s first picture theatre where the first movie was shown in 1896. The theatre as it is was created in 1924. It has good acoustics but unfortunately last night it got too hot!!

The show has been touring the state – has been to Bendigo, Warrnambool, Horsham & still has Sale, Frankston & Warrugal to go.
