Stranger Than Fiction: the life & times of Split Enz – Mike Chunn

Mike Chunn book

Recently I read this book by Mike Chunn (published in 1992) from his time in Split Enz & later from the outside looking back in. The book is difficult to purchase these days. One well-known online outlet sells it for an enormous price but I found a copy (via Abe Books) at Book Now in Bendigo.

It starts with Brian (Tim) Finn & Mike at boarding school in Auckland (Sacred Heart in Glen Innes): a school where Wally Wilkinson was a day boy in the same era & moves through the ‘Frenz-ships’, hardships, frustrations & success till the final show.

Mike noted Split Enz were unconventional when they began (as Split Ends) & described them as “easily NZ’s most international music act”. I have read lots of books about NZ music & NZ musicians. This is one of the best. It is well-written, insightful & easy to read.
