Basement Discs is about to close its bricks & mortar shop in the location where it has been for 29 years. They’ve held some great shows down there on their tiny stage. And on Saturday afternoon they held the last one ever down in the basement. There were 5 acts who delivered short sets & Mike was last on in this last ever show. The afternoon was filmed for posterity.

He’d thought about what he would sung & began with the fitting Jamaican Farewell. And sang that song about reflection & possibility Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now. It was known that crowd participation was expected so it wasn’t surprising that all present (& there was a big crowd filling that tiny space) were asked to sing along with Mike as he launched into I’ll Be Gone.
There was the sense though that his set was being hi-jacked as musicians who had performed earlier were directed to join Mike on stage for what then became the last song for the afternoon; Esmerelda. Once again Mike sang without his guitar as all present sang along.
Personally, I would have liked to hear Mike play & sing just a few more songs from his huge repertoire. But all present loved what he did deliver & cheered & clapped enthusiastically.
