Melbourne 1969 …

What a time it must have been …

A couple of years ago (when I was writing about a Kiwi musician for the NZ music site AudioCulture), I was lent a scrapbook of 1969 ads for gigs, reviews, press releases, etc. In this collection were a couple of columns written by Lin Annabel: one with the heading Australia – the place where everything happens. And it was.

Mentioned in the column was Flying Circus (with Kiwi Doug Rowe) who then had a hit with Hayride – noting that the B-side of this single was an original written by Doug. The column noted that Compulsion were disbanding so Ben Kaika was joining the Castaways and announcing that the NZ Avengers (that’s the Wellington Avengers for any Kiwi readers) were booked for 4 weeks in Perth & they had been super-busy.

Readers were also informed that the Rebels had arrived, with Lin predicting if they got the right opportunities they would do very well in Aus. The column also noted that Leo de Castro was then in Melbourne; that Max Merritt was about to leave Aus; that Howard Gable had arrived in Melbourne to work at EMI; that both Ray Columbus & Yolande Gibson were expected soon & that Simple Image were due to arrive in 2 months.
