Max Merritt’s death

Today is a sad day. It’s grey & gloomy in Melbourne. Max didn’t like grey days. He’d met lots of them in the years he & the band lived in the UK in the early 70s. When I interviewed him in Santa Monica in 1997 he’d commented, “It was very hard to get up & be creative & inspired when the weather was grey.” He loved the sun & the warmth California offered.

We all know Max had been ill for such a long time. A couple of weeks ago I interviewed Billy Kristian by phone in NZ. Logically we spoke about Max. (Billy had been in the Meteors with Max on 2 different occasions back in the 60s.) Billy commented that Max was now almost 80 noting he (Max) seemed to be hanging in there. But we now know Max has died.

I want to post this promptly. But recently I wrote 2 back stories about Max (one about his Melbourne years; the other about his time in the UK) for the NZ music website AudioCulture. See www.audioculture.co.nz
