It’s OK, I’m not confused. I know Bob Bertles was Australian but as he spent what seemed to be so long in the Meteors with Max, he deserves acknowledgement here. It was one-time Meteors drummer Bruno Lawrence who recommended Bob to Max. And Bob had previously worked with Stewie Speers, the then Meteors drummer.
Early in his career Bob was a jazz musician who played with the now internationally known Mike Nock who is also a Kiwi. It was 1967 when Bob joined Max & the Meteors & not long after that the band were in the significant accident in Gippsland where the three in the front sustained major injuries. It was only Yuk Harrison sandwiched in the back with their gear who was uninjured.
In 1970, with Dave Russell in the spot where Yuk had been, Max & the band moved to the UK. While there, Bob did session work with high profile Brits like Cilla Black & Cliff Richard.
He continued to work as a musician & died late December 2024 aged 85.
