Kevin Borich Express at Memo Jan 25, 2020

Wow! We have seen this line-up of the Express (Kevin; bass player Chris Gilbert & drummer Jon Carson) a number of times in the last few years. They are now a much tighter unit & with Jon & Chris adding backing vocals the overall sound is fuller.

KB & Chris Memo Jan 2020

KEVIN; JON CARSON (PARTLY OBSCURED); CHRIS GILBERT

This show was the 2nd of 3 shows they were doing in Melbourne over the Australia Day long weekend & Kevin’s first at Memo. The previous Friday he did a rare solo show in Sydney with violinist Adrian Keating as his special guest.

For the 1st set at Memo Kevin sat playing his National Steel Guitar as Chris played stand-up bass. They gave us greats like Lonely One, Soapbox Bitchin’ Blues, Medicine Man … In the 2nd set the energy was up; Kevin was on his feet, Chris playing bass guitar. We heard 21st Century, Heartstarter … on to The Place, the gem from the La De Da’s from 1973, written by Kevin. This song was a single & on the album (recently re-mastered & still for sale via Kevin’s website) Rock’n’Roll Sandwich. I now know this song was written about the legendary Sydney hotel & major music venue the Bondi Lifesaver.

People were up dancing. But suddenly the band was being asked to do the last song cos it had gone 11pm when the venue needs to deliver no noise to the local neighbours. So keeping the energy up Kevin ran Going Downtown into Going Somewhere.

Then it was over …..
