Behind the Rock and Beyond

I’d read Behind the Rock by Jon Hayton & Leon Isackson in 1996. Vicki Perjanik had bought me a copy & given it to me the day I interviewed Mike Perjanik for the biography I was the researching about Tommy Adderley (who is mentioned in this book). When the updated version of the book Behind the Rock and Beyond came out in 2010 I decided I didn’t need to buy that one …

In November when I interviewed Mick Leyton (who I know is London-born) but he is important to the Auckland music scene in the mid-60s & came to Sydney when Mike Perjanik lost Tommy as his male vocalist.  That was when Mick got a ‘Come-now!’ phone call. He did. At interview he told me there was information about 2 bands he had been in (The Chant & Little Chant) in the updated book. So I have now bought the second book & read the Beyond chapters.

Both books are entertaining reading: well written & include lots about Kiwi musicians – both those in NZ in the mid-60s when the Hayton-Isackson band, the Rajahs spent a few weeks in NZ; some about Kiwi musicians who came to Australia & some about musicians they re-connected with on further trips to NZ in the 70s.
