Tonight & Friday night Dragon performed at Memo Music Theatre in St Kilda. Mi-Sex were on the same bill making it a very-Kiwi show.
Mark Williams is out the front of Dragon & has been in that role for 12 years now. And is so good at that; not an easy task when in the hit-making days it was Marc Hunter’s role. Todd Hunter’s presence is still strong but not in the audience-relating role Mark has.
They delivered all the ’70s songs I wanted to hear and more: April Sun in Cuba, O Zambesi, Sunshine; my favourite Dragon track Are You Old Enough and the 1983 hit Rain.
There was lots of audience participation, encouraged by Mark. People sang along; at times with gestures from Mark as their cues – two fingers pointed at his eyes to remind fans of the line snake eyes in paradise …
Dragon’s performance was great. At interview yesterday Mark Williams said he saw his role as one of ‘care-taker’ of the Dragon songbook so that their music can live on. And it does live on.
