Down Under the Covers: CD recently released by Field, See & Mason

,

Down Under the Covers was released late 2016 by Field, See & Mason who are Lindsay Field, Sam See & Glyn Mason.

Glyn had known Lindsay since their Wellington days. Glyn was in mid-sixties bands Road Runners, then Bitter End. Lindsay was in another Wellington band Original Sin. Glyn came to Australia in 1969 as lead singer with the Rebels (previously Larry’s Rebels) after Larry had left & the band changed its name. Lindsay came to Australia as a 19-year old to star as Claude in Hair. He has been a long time member of the John Farnham Band & is also known as a session musician, vocal coach, record producer, musical director & as an arranger.

Sam was in Fraternity, Flying Circus & Sherbet. In Australia Glyn has been in Australian bands like Chain, Ariel. Together Sam & Glyn were in Stockley, See & Mason which was enormously popular in the late 70s. It was 2002 when Sam & Glyn did their first gig together, eventually naming the duo the Pardoners. In 2014 they began working with Lindsay as Field, See & Mason, performing a mix of originals and covers. The three-part harmonies they deliver are stunning.

The CD was recorded live in August 2016. Sam did the arrangements. The sleeve tells us that Sam had suggested the trio record this collections, which is described as “re-imagining Australian classics in Field, See & Mason mode: fresh arrangements for three voices, three acoustic rocks guitars, and stomp.”

Down Under the Covers is an excellent representation of their live performances where they play a mix of originals and covers. They work regularly at a number of different venues around Melbourne, like the Royal Oak in North Fitzroy.

The most surprising tracks are AC/DC’s ‘Highway to Hell’ and the two INXS tracks ‘Don’t Change’ and ‘Never Tear Us Apart.’ My favourite though is the Glyn Mason original from his days with Ariel (the Mike Rudd-Bill Putt band): ‘It’s Only Love.’

The CD is available from the Pardoners  website.
