For the three shows Kevin did in Melbourne over Easter, he didn’t have his regular band. Instead he had the Melbourne go-to bass player & fellow Kiwi Roger McLachlan & the now legendary drummer Gil Matthews.

Southland born Roger grew up in a very musical family. His father Bill had a band, & Roger had his own band from the time he was 12 years old. I was amazed when he told me that at interview a few years ago. And not only did he have a band, they did gigs at weekends & were paid. He said they were basically a Beatles cover band.

During the show Roger had a chat with the audience & told us about the time when he, as a teenager heard the La De Da’s singing ‘Gonna See My Baby Tonight’ on the radio. Which tells us he’s a bit younger than Kevin.

It was great to see him in action again & he can now add the Kevin-band to the growing list of bands he has or does play with.
