Deaths of Ray Goodwin & Red McKelvie

The song Universal Radio was written by Ray & the others in Dragon in their very early days in NZ

AudioCulture, the NZ online website that describes itself as a ‘noisy library’ yesterday announced these two deaths.

Ray Goodwin is best known for his years with Dragon. This was in the early days for the band. He was there at the start in 1972, came to Australia with them but left soon after their arrival in 1975. After he left Paul Hewson joined & the band went on to achieve those glorious early hits.

After he’d left Dragon, still in Australia, Ray spent a year in the All Stars, in the spot that Kevin Borich had had as lead guitarist. Later again Ray was one of 5 Kiwi musicians who were in the ex-pat band Monsoon, who were Melbourne-based.

Red McKelvie is best known for the signature guitar sound he gave the 1975 Richard Clapton hit Girls on the Avenue. He had arrived in Sydney in the late 60s, was one of 2 people who formed Quill before going on to act as short term replacement for Doug Rowe in Flying Circus during 1970.

He had a long career as a musician and producer in NZ after his time in Australia.

Oh so sad to hear of Rays death. Met him in Sydney in 1977 where I was trying to put various bands together. Had the pleasure of playing his “L” series strat that he had sold to a mate of mine. A lovely bloke. Sadly missed. Nev Wilson (ex Wellington”.
