What would it be like to be the son of a guitar God like Billy TK … such big boots to fill!
On Thursday night we got to see Billy TK Jnr in his Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society t-shirt in action. Jesse Valach from the support band had warned us that Billy would rock our socks off. And we weren’t disappointed. He is a great guitarist.
The band: Billy & his rhythm section have just spent 3 weeks in New Zealand, are doing a week of gigs in Melbourne & in January are heading for Chicago where they will open for legendary blues guitarist Buddy Guy at his club.
At Musicland the band (along with a brilliant local keyboard player) treated us to songs from Billy’s young years growing up with his Dad in NZ (songs from the Hendrix catalogue, from Santana, BB King) & originals from Billy Jnr’s CDÂ Blues Benediction.
For regulars to this blog you will know that he isn’t in the group of musicians who came from NZ to Aus during 1959 – 1976 but as son of Billy TK he has street cred & cannot be ignored. He is a great guitarist so is carrying on the family tradition. And he sings with a rich, strong, resonant voice.
