A group of Melbourne-based musicians delivered a show Saturday night to celebrate Marc’s life & his long career in music. The band including Kiwi bass player Roger McLachlan was excellent. Of the five singers the stand-outs were Mick Pealing (from Stars), Joe Creighton and the keyboard player in this band, Michael Oliphant. Joe, as a session musician had played on Marc’s fourth solo album Night & Day.
Alex Formosa (aka Alex Baudo; aka Alex Formosa Baudo) first met Marc through his older brother, guitarist & producer Ric (who despite his name being on the flyer was not in the band). Alex had been good friends with Marc for many years. He had the anchor role in the show & sang many of the songs which were a mix of well-known ones from the Dragon song-book, like Sunshine; Blacktown Boogie; Still in Love; Rain; Young Years & songs from Marc’s solo albums, including several from his second album Big City Talk.
Are You Old Enough & April Sun in Cuba were sung late in the show with audience participation. But if you had gone expecting the night to cover just songs from the Dragon song-book or if you wanted more songs to sing along to, I suspect you would have been disappointed. The show was titled Communication (the name of Marc’s third solo album) but I left feeling some communication with the audience was missing.
